The first special exhibition at the new Whitney Museum of American Art spanned six decades of Stella’s career, presenting his artistic evolution, from early minimalist classics to complex later sculptures. It occupied the entire 5th Floor, and the spatial layout utilized temporary walls that guided viewers through Stella’s ever-changing styles, balancing simplicity with complexity as seen in his works. Rooms with views into other spaces allowed for visual connections and orientation.
