The Clark Institute, James Ewing 02

This exhibition drew from the Shanghai Museum’s collection of bronze vessels and bells dating from the late Xia through the Western Han dynasties. Designed by Selldorf Architects for the first installation in the West Pavilion of The Clark’s new Visitor Center, the exhibition was enclosed by a scrim that echoed the rhythm and proportion of the building’s glass and steel façade. The scrim created a clearly defined space to showcase the art and protected objects from direct sunlight and the glare of a reflecting pool outside. Arranged chronologically, 32 objects were displayed in custom-designed vitrines painted in a deep bronze hue.
