Steinway Hall, Selldorf Architects

Founded in New York City in 1853, Steinway & Sons has been manufacturing and showcasing pianos in the city ever since. Steinway Hall, prominently located in a modern limestone and steel high-rise on Avenue of the Americas, welcomes the public to a large, light-filled showroom with expansive windows at street level. Inspired by Steinway’s legacy of craftsmanship, the design establishes a strong contemporary presence for the iconic piano maker. The Recital Hall, designed for intimate public performances and private recording sessions, features superb acoustics that elevate the modern space with a sense of craft and character.

A focal point of the design is a central open stair that connects the showroom to the level below. To complement the stair, contemporary artist Spencer Finch has created a hanging light installation inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations.

The lower level contains a 72-seat Recital Hall, recording studio, practice rooms and concert artists’ space. The hall’s tilted wood veneer panels and scale provide acoustical tuning and bring a sense of warmth to the performance space. Throughout the space, refined details including oak-end grain floors and a custom bentwood ceiling elevate the company’s history through visible craftsmanship.
