This 1908 neoclassical mansion on Manhattan’s Upper East Side has been occupied by Acquavella Galleries since 1967. The building’s rich interiors, with limestone walls, black-and-white marble floors, wrought-iron railings, and carved-stone mantelpieces provide a refined setting to exhibit major 19th and 20th-century artworks. The renovation carefully balanced preserving existing elements with a minimalist design for the ground floor south gallery which now showcases contemporary art, creating an elegant juxtaposition of classical and modern aesthetics. The integrity of the original detailing was maintained by reconstructing gallery walls, restoring exterior and interior stone walls, and preserving marble and hardwood floors.
