Introducing Liz: DC’s Whitman-Walker Project Gets its Name

Selldorf Architects, February 20, 2019

Whitman-Walker Health System’s redevelopment in Washington, DC, is now officially known as Liz. Named after HIV activist and actress Elizabeth Taylor, the Selldorf Architects-designed mixed-use project is a joint venture between Whitman-Walker and Fivesquares Development and is scheduled for completion in June of this year.

Conceived as a community resource and support system, the seven-story building restores both the Belmont Garage and the Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center and will include apartments and offices on the upper levels, with retail and cultural space occupying the ground level. Whitman-Walker will reside on the second floor, accommodating its administrative staff and public and research programs. Liz will also offer outdoor space with landscaping, seating areas and public art, designed by Brooklyn-based Future Green Studios. Selldorf Architects is also working collaboratively with DC architecture firm CORE who serves as the Executive Architect for the project.
