Set on a bluff overlooking Katama Bay, this contemporary house is designed to capture panoramic island and ocean views and celebrate indoor/outdoor living. The main house, guest/pool house, and the garage are conceived as an ensemble surrounding a forecourt framed by stone walls and connected by pergolas, creating a layered experience of architecture and landscape. The buildings’ architectural language reinterprets the local vernacular through a modern rhythm of large single-lite windows, window walls, and naturally weathering clapboard-clad volumes capped by sloped shed roofs.

Guests arrive and park outside the forecourt. Passing a tall stone wall, they follow a pergola to the entrance of the main house and enter the foyer with the living room beyond. Window walls open out to the view of lawn, bobbing sailboats, and the bay. A floor-to-ceiling window wall extends the length of the east side of the house, bringing expansive views into the dining room, eat-in kitchen, and the den. A long deck links the living and dining rooms, allowing for seamless indoor/outdoor entertaining. A four-season room that can be outfitted with floor-to-ceiling screens or fixed windows further connects the house to the landscape.
The second floor contains three en-suite bedrooms and an office that can double as a guest room, all of which open onto a partially covered balcony. The lower level contains a media room accented with warm wood paneling and an intimate reading nook. Selldorf also provided the interior design, selecting all the furnishings and finishes for the house. The light and airy palate enhances the relaxed atmosphere of the house and helps keep the focus on the views. Furnishings include VICA by Annabelle Selldorf as well as Scandinavian and early American-influenced pieces.
Michael Boucher Landscape Architecture designed the lush grounds, which include lawns, meadows, and a large vegetable garden. Across the landscaped court, the pool house includes a bathroom, gym, and two guest rooms with a small tea kitchen. These additional spaces allow this multigenerational family to enjoy the island year-round.
Sustainable strategies include rooftop photovoltaics, mass timber construction, locally sourced materials, native and naturalized plantings, and a low irrigation landscape.
