Province of Ontario Commits $35 Million to Art Gallery of Ontario Expansion
Selldorf Architects, May 4, 2026
We are thrilled to share that the Province of Ontario announced a $35-million investment in capital funding to support the Dani Reiss Modern and Contemporary Gallery, the 40,000 sf addition to the Art Gallery of Ontario. The Dani Reiss Modern and Contemporary Gallery team is comprised of Diamond Schmitt, Selldorf Architects and Two Row Architect.
The project has also received Zero Carbon Building Design Standard certification and will be pursuing Zero Carbon Building Operation certification, setting a new precedent of future-proof design for museums and cultural buildings at this scale.
Currently under construction, the Dani Reiss Modern and Contemporary Gallery will sit one story above the AGO’s loading dock on the northeast corner of the building, nestled between the AGO and the Ontario College of Art and Design University. Envisioned with flexibility as a core underlying principle, with 14 new galleries across five floors, the expansion will increase total display space by 30 percent. The design approach is grounded in Indigeneity, particularly in ensuring adaptability, accessibility, inclusivity, meaningful materials, and a welcoming environment.
