Skarstedt Gallery

New York, NY

Selldorf Architects renovated this gallery space for the Skarstedt Gallery’s new downtown location. The renovation relocates the entrance to the east end of the façade, drawing it closer to the other galleries along West 21st Street, and adds two new glass and metal doors to the façade which span floor to ceiling. Inside, circulation is reconfigured so that visitors pass through a small entrance gallery before the main exhibition space is revealed.

The 45’ x 38’ main gallery, which was previously defined by its dark wood and steel beam ceiling, was painted white to create a space that feels more cohesive and less distracting to the art. The renovation improved the space further through the extension of the main gallery walls, new millwork throughout, a completely updated reception area, and new gallery lighting.
