Houses at Sagaponack

Southampton, New York

The Houses at Sagaponac is a development on eastern Long Island of moderately sized homes designed by a select group of contemporary architects. Selldorf Architects’ 1.5-acre site is located on a gentle slope covered in wild grasses and trees and without any major views. The house’s program intertwines exterior and interior spaces and volumes, such that the house becomes an intrinsic element in the relief of the site, surrounded by a series of exterior “rooms.” The building’s simple timber frame is sheathed with clear and seamless cedar siding.

A concrete plinth anchors the structure and extends to low retaining walls that frame a formal lawn with a raised terrace and pool, a sunken garden, and an apple orchard. The single-story wing is organized around a courtyard glazed on three sides to visually connect the public spaces of the foyer, kitchen, and living and dining rooms. The bedrooms and the study are situated in a two-story structure and open to the sunken garden, thus creating a more private environment.
