Haunch of Venison London

London, England

Selldorf Architects recently completed the renovation of the original Haunch of Venison Gallery in London, a 10,700 sf space comprised of two distinct buildings connected by a central atrium space with a skylight. Diverse in character, the rooms ranged in condition from raw and unfinished to historic, paneled interiors. Selldorf Architects sought to establish a cohesive visual identity for the gallery and preserve historic details while also defining a logically organized plan and circulation sequence for the building. The new white walls for the gallery spaces and viewing rooms were added throughout to allow for the display

of artwork, and to create visual continuity between the different levels. These walls at times mask preserved paneling beneath, while on the second level they stop short to reveal restored decorative ceiling molding. The existing wood flooring was also preserved and restored, as was the building’s ornate stone staircase. In the lobby, Selldorf Architects created a custom reception desk and book display made from powder-coated metal. Selldorf Architects collaborated with local firm London Studio Architecture on the project. (Photos: Courtesy of Haunch of Venison)
